Obituary

McIntosh, Alene E.. age 90, passed away Monday, December 9, 2019 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. She was born on February 16, 1929 to the late George and Flossie (DUNN) Markoff in Jackson, Kentucky. Alene was a DAR member and possessed an avid interest in nature, history, and genealogy.

Alene was a proud 1947 Kiser High School graduate.
While in high school, Alene worked at the Bluebird Bakery where she met the love of her life, Lester McIntosh. She wasn’t really interested in him at first, but one day, while sick in bed, the guys from the Bluebird Bakery came to visit her to cheer her up, and she fell in love with Lester.

Alene and Lester were married June 14, 1947 and Lester joined the U.S. Air Force, where they traveled around the country. Alene worked the first few years of her married life as a secretary at Air Force Bases, including Edwards Air Force Base in California, and Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. Alene also worked as a secretary for Chrysler and as a bank teller at Monroe Federal Savings and Loan in Tipp City, Ohio.

Alene and Lester could not have children on their own, but were like parents to many, including her sister Judith, all of her Nephews and Niece and all of their kids. She was the fun, loving Aunt who would stop whatever she was doing to teach, nurture, and play with all of the nieces, nephews, and all of their friends.

Alene had a love of nature, spending years feeding all of the animals, from cats, dogs, raccoons, and even a fox. Alene enjoyed baking, sewing, spending time with her neighbors, and spending time at the historical log cabin with the descendants of the family that once lived there. In 2017, with a desire to preserve what she could of the old log cabin, Alene allowed the Vandalia Butler Historical Society to use the cabin to make a miniature replica to display on the Historical Society grounds in Vandalia.

Alene is preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years Lester, parents George Sr. and Flossie Markoff, brother George Markoff Jr, and niece Diana Markoff.

She is survived by her sister, Judith Bowers Francis, nephews, George (Nikki) Markoff III, Michael (B. Michelle) Bowers, and Greg J. Bowers; great-nephews Nicholas (Barbara) Markoff, Gregory A. Bowers, Logan Graham, and Ryan Markoff; great-nieces Robin (Johnny) Newman, Kimberly Bowers, Breanna Graham, and Tynan Markoff; great-great nephews Joshua (Keely) Newman, Bryce Markoff, Mason Markoff, and Cooper Markoff; great-great niece Sierra Newman, special cousins Gladys Louiso, Bob Pollitt, and Monica Smith; special friends, Dale Baker and Bill Simms; special cat, Jet; and devoted neighbors.

Special thanks to caregivers Jill Brown and Paul Snyder, Dr. Gene Lease, Dr. Steven Miller, and Dr. Vermon, MVH and Butler Township Police and EMS crews that treated Alene with care, compassion and kindness.

The family will receive friends 5pm-7pm Friday December 13, 2019 at Baker-Hazel & Snider, 5555 Philadelphia Dr. Dayton, OH 45415. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am Saturday December 14, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 411 E 2nd St. Dayton OH 45402. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Grateful that the old log cabin where the Lorenz family once lived introduced us to Alene and Lester McIntosh, who became our firm friends. She and Lester certainly enriched our family both with their friendship and with their generous sharing of their link to our family's past. Our visits were such a delight through the years. Alene loved the favorite beverage that Dale Baker would bring and she would always offer me the infamous dandelion wine!

I will miss the great long phone conversations we had about feeding the cats in your neighborhood to the time of year that was best to make lye soap 😊. My dad (Bob Pollitt) would enjoy the pizza visits with you too. You had a lot of genealogy to share As well. I’ll treasure those times in my heart ❤️. We love you still.

Thank you Monica, you and Bob always brought a smile to Auntie's face. Her favorite chuckle was when she called him at rehab and told him to behave himself and listen to the nurses!! She loved to tell that story. Thank you for being a precious cousin! Michelle Bowers
