Obituary for Evelyne S. Holmes (Stewart)

Evelyne Stewart Holmes’ (103) long and joyous life came to fulfillment on Monday, October 12, 2020. Born August 20, 1917 in Darlington, Indiana, she was the sixth of seven children, and the youngest daughter of Walter and Cordelia (Lough) Stewart. She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Chester Walmsley Holmes.

For no apparent reason, she seemed proud of her children who all reside in the greater Dayton area. Alison Roberts, Jim (Melinda) Holmes, Tom (Barb, deceased) Holmes and Rick (Vickie) Holmes. Each generation of grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her someone new to shower her love upon. She has 9 grandchildren: Ann Roberts, Randy (Michele) Roberts, Traci (Todd) Tuttle, Molly (Todd) Girolamo, Leslie Backus, Sara (Ryan) Klekar, Amy Hillman, Alex (Hanna) Holmes and Tim (Allie) Holmes. She enjoyed her 19 great and great-great grandchildren plus one expected in November.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews – many who claim she raised them.

She was an active member of Shiloh United Church of Christ for 65 years, annoying several Sr Pastors and possibly the Good Lord. She frequently played piano at Sunday services, funerals, and her greatest love, the Children’s Choir. She was a recipient of the Shiloh Service Award.

She worked for many years as Executive Assistant to the President of The Lion Group (formerly Lion Uniform) in Vandalia. Upon her retirement, she stayed active as a volunteer at Shiloh House Adult Day Care and Samaritan North. She was honored by Goodwill Easter Seals as Volunteer of the Year.

We are all grateful that we are blessed to have her as Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Friend.

A Celebration of Life led by Pastor Jay McMillen will be held 2 PM, Sunday, November 1, 2020, at Shiloh Church, UCC, 5300 Philadelphia Dr. at N. Main St., Dayton 45415. The family will receive friends at 1:30 PM until the time of the service. There will be safety protocols including mandatory masking and social distancing required as it would be the family’s wish to keep all safe and healthy. The service will be streamed at https://www.facebook.com/shilohchurchucc. In lieu of flowers, Evelyne requested contributions be made to Shiloh Church UCC,
